Where did the word “Cuyo” come from?

Obviously that’s the name of our home town. “Cuyo ang akeng banua” But, have you ever wondered where did it come from? If that’s the case, here’s the answer.

One of our ancestors Diokno Manlavi sez…

When the Spaniards landed in the middle of 1662 they asked the first native they met what the name of the Island was. The native merely repeated the first Spanish word he heard –“Cuyo”– and so it was named Cuyo which in Spanish means “of which, of whom, whose, where of”.

    ja basi lamang sa akeng nabasa sa palawan museum nga istorya ang cuyo kung adin agalin ang aran ateng banua.. nabasa ko ja sa anang ing sulat ni tay jess dela torre.. ang aran na cuyo kuno ag alin sa limeg ang mga spaniards.. ang datong unang tiempo sa batong cuyo na dadi kung tawagen aga panlaba ang mga sinaunang cuyunon ang makita anda na ag abot ang mga spaniards ag keras sanda.. tapos nasalan andang mga lalaban, ag tago sanda sa likod ang mga bato, nabati anda ang arampangan ang mga spaniards.
